Dream Theorists: Carl Jung

In the beginning, Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1960) studied under Sigmund Freud. Eventually, their differing views on dreams caused a major rift and each went their separate ways.

Like Freud, Jung believed in the existence of the unconscious. However, he didn't see the unconscious as animalistic, instinctual, and sexual; he saw it as more spi
ritual. Dreams were a way of communicating and acquainting ourselves with the unconscious. Dreams were not attempts to conceal our true feelings from the waking mind, but rather they were a window to our unconscious. They served to guide the waking self to achieve wholeness. Dreams offered a solution to a problem we are facing in our waking life.

Since dreams were a way of communicating with the unconscious, Jung felt that the imageries in dreams were a way of revealing something about ourselves, our relationships with others, and situations in our waking life. Dreams guided our personal growth and helped to self-achieve our potential.

Often discussing what is currently going on in your life, helps to interpret and unlock the cryptic and bizarre images of your dreams. Jung believed that we all possess the necessary tools to interpret our own dreams. There is no one correct way to interpret a dream. The meaning of your dreams is a personal judgment and is up to you on how to interpret them.

Hi! I’m writing you from Iceland. I had the most frightening dream I have ever head to night. I saw trough my up stares window my six year old son being brutally bullied. And I started screaming through the window… then I woke up. I have never bin troubled so much by a dream. He has ADHD and I worry about him constantly, is it just me worrying that is coming trough in my dreams?

Anne, colours in your dream usually show shades of feeling, or attitudes of mind. Many people dream in colour, so when colour appears, it is often to do with strong emotions in the dream. It is therefore worthwhile defining what feelings accompany the colour in your dream.

The general meanings of seeing color orange in dream are :warmth, wholeness, influence of the spiritual, life energy. Your dream was telling you that you:

1) want to expand your interests and develop new activities

2) want a wider sphere of influence

3) feel friendly and welcoming

4) want more contact with others

5) feel enthusiastic, outgoing and adventurous

6) are driven by desires and hopes toward the new, undiscovered and satisfying

7) feel driven but need to overcome your doubts or fear of failure.

Frfix, your dream may be a reflection of the confusion and anxieties that the you experience in daily life. To see your son in your dream might not have any significance and is simply mirroring your waking life.

Dreams with violent themes suggest that the dreamer has unconscious negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, and anger. If you are not dealing with these feeling consciously, your dreams are compensating and bringing into awareness the need for honest reflection and emotional balance in daily life. It might also be that you are victimising your son who is not strong enough to stand against your desires or will.

If you have experienced great fear in your dream, then you have experienced a nightmare. These types of dreams are very important because your unconscious mind is trying to tell you something. If you have repressed issues, they may be coming to the surface. Issues and concerns, repressed emotions, and daily stress all contribute to an uneasy sleep and to fear filled dreams.
And, as you see, you already knew what your dream was telling you : it was just you worrying too much and that was coming trough in your dreams

Spirita: Can you help me with this dream? I was a Realtor having open house in an old junky house I once owned. It had been extensively remodeled with new interior decoration and windows. I wondered if I should buy it again. Looking closely, I saw it had its same old wiring and the same old leaky roof.

At 12:42 PM, Blogger Spirita said...

Peter, house usually represents yourself, and your different activities or departments in life. Mostly the house symbolize our emotional and psychological selves. All of your experiences, stages of development, and parts of your conscious and unconscious life may be represented by that house. The house may be representing issues concerning a particular dilemma in your life.
An old house could refer to a previous life in some way connected with your present existence.

More specific, your dream was telling you that you are trying to work on yourself to become a better person. Since your house looks remodelled that signifies your success to achieve the goal but old wiring and same old leaky roof denotes a still long way for you to be almost perfect.

I had a dream that I was about to marry a stranger that I only knew for 3 hours. My ex was in the front row ..videotaping the event...I was crying telling everyone I didnt want to marry this man. The weeding was being held at my elementary school audtiorium. What does this mean. I never dreamt about any wedding. My wedding was the second wedding that day. (during the dream) the stranger was clearly visible but I do not know who this person is.
The wedding didnt go through.

thanks sm1 referred me to you from yahoo answers.

Mis Understood, a wedding in a dream is very personal symbol. It usually represents the harmonious integration of the dreamer's personality (i.e. the coming together of masculine, feminine, shadow, anima, physical, spiritual, unconscious, or/and conscious components). The marriage in your dream may represent the union of the different sides of your own character. This is a positive dream symbol because it suggests a degree of self-awareness and integration. People dream about weddings during times of stress and difficulty. But remember that dreams often depict your fears, they are seldom predictions. So learn from the dream to sort out what is troubling you. Don't use them to trouble yourself.

One of the simplest meanings a man in your dream has is that he portrays your relationship, your feelings about, or responses to, a relationship with a man in general. The man in your dreams in nearly always an aspect of your own feelings, hopes and fears.

Crying in dreams is simply the release of sorrow, grief, misery, negative emotion, frustration, or fear that has been held back, knowingly or unknowingly, during the day. It may be an intuitive knowledge of another leaving us, or sorrow over something we have done.

I saw my exboyfriend (over a year ago) and his girlfriend in my dream. I called my ex over to talk. He left his girlfriend to come talk to me. Then, his girlfriend came running after us and joined in on the conversation. But then something really weird happen. She had her hands all over him. She had the smallest hands ever! (She is really tall in real life, same height as him, maybe taller..) Anyway, it was really strange but it felt great in my dream. His girlfriend told me to listen to my ex's heartbeat. I was like "what?" when she said that in my dream. Then she took my hand and put it on his heart. She asked "can you feel it?It's beating like crazy right?" I then, put my head on his heart to listen to his heart beat. It was beating normal at first and then it started beating fast...really really fast. It felt so real. I actually heard and felt his heartbeat, I am not joking-and then I woke up.

I have this re-occuring dream about an old russian woman. Weird.

I think if the unconcious was innately sexual I would be having more dreams about Jessica Alba and less dreams about old Russian women.

To dream of HANDS, represents how you perceive relationship to those around you and how you connect with the world. Hands serve as a form of communication.

To dream that your ex's girlfriend's hands are all over him, represents how you perceive their connection and their relationship. Your dream may also reflect anxieties about losing touch with him or that you are definitely drifting apart. To dream that she has unusually small hands, denotes your wish for her not to succeed in achieving her goals with your ex.

To hear a heartbeat in your dream, suggests that you are not confronting or recognizing your feelings. You need to approaching thing head-on. Alternatively, a heartbeat may symbolize life or fear. You are feeling threatened in some way.

Keep in mind that characters in your dreams represent unfinished communication with those persons. When you see your ex in your dream, signifies your unconscious feelings you still have towards him.

I had a dream that i was kissing this famous guy, and then he turned into my cat! Then later i kissed the cat on the forehead, like i do to my cat all the time, and the cat turned into my crush. Is there a true meaning of this dream? Can any of you interperet it or am i postin for no reason?

At 8:03 PM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, every dream has a meaning and can be interpreted. Your dream is very cute and sweet and it can be also easily explained.

Because a CAT is often an easy source of physical contact and affection it can signify the need to be cared for and warm affection, even sexual love accompanied with intense warm feelings. It can also represent your need to care for someone or be cared for. In this dream with kissing you may be expressing feelings that are difficult to express during the day. Kissing is usually an indication of warmth, affection, and happiness. If you don't receive enough love and affection in your daily life, then this could be a compensatory dream, where you are comforting yourself .Also this dream could be a form of wish fulfillment.

I had a very vivid dream last night that had the world being overtaken by zombies (I dream about zombies quite frequently) after someone had attacked us (in the U.S.A.) with what I assume were nukes or some sort of biological bombs.
I went in search of one of my female friends, found her and her family in the dark that never seemed to go away and we barracaded ourselves in a house. Then my friend and I started to develope a romantic thing between us. We started kissing, and then moved on from there to more erotic things, and then I woke up.
There's more detail than that in the what I remember, but that's the short version. It was a very realistic and vivid dream. Creeped me out actually.

S.M.D, dreaming about a war or a battle suggests that you have some internal conflicts. One part of your personality or psyche may be battling with another for control and the dream reflects this internal war. Another reason for dreaming about war is that you may be faced with a situation that requires you to be aggressive or assertive and to come to terms with opposition.
When you are seeing zombies in your dream usually means that you are emotionally disconnected from things going on around you. You may be experiencing unhealthy detachment and are unable to appropriately feel positive or negative emotions. Currently, you may be out of touch and outside of the main flow of life. This dream could positively sever you and help you to become aware of emotional issues and circumstances in daily life that are difficult to face.
Darkness in your dream can be relate to depressing or sad feelings.
Erotic components in your dream express your hidden desires.

I had the weirdest dream when i was taking a nap today. Before i begin i am a freshman in college and up until this year i was a competetive figure skater. In the dream i was walking on the sidewalk in nyc (my home) when i saw all these adult women (who in reality used to skate at the same rink as me), one of them was a lesbian. i was walking towards these steps when i slipped on this huge frozen puddle and fell really hard. i got up and continued up the stairs. up there there was an old woman (only in her underwear) i couldnt look at her because it was disturbing. she, however, was trying to comfort about my fall on the frozen puddle. next i think i bought a pack of cigarettes. then i was walking around in the nude, but i was comfortable w/ my body. next my old skating coach was there, she saw my cigarettes, which was akward. she was talking to a lady about this ladies daughter who was a gymnist and was getting back into gymnastics. however, she was only going to states, not nationals, which i thought in my dream was unworthy. then this woman who i had seen at the bottom of the stairs before was at the top ogf the stairs now. when i looked at her, she was nude, but she was not a woman, she had a penis, but her face was slightly feminine although also masculine. this man kinda turned me on in my dream, more so when i looked at his body than face. next i was somewhere else with my mother. i had decided i was gonna go back to high school next year. i decided on thiss prestigious prep school. next i think i was passed out drunk, and this boy (who in reality used to be my friend but then things got akward when he told me he liked me) was there and sexually took advantage of me, but in my dream i wanted hi to. what does all of this mean, especially the part with that man who was also a woman. i think it has something to do w./ my skating also. i dont know. help!

Anonymous, SKATING in your dream may represent sense of balance and proportion in life and skill in keeping balanced in a difficult circumstance. It could also represent some aspects of the way that you run your life, or may refer to internal struggles where one part of your psyche or personality is attempting to "win" over another. At times life is like a challenging sport. We compete, try to win, and attempt to develop our abilities so that we will succeed. In the dream, the outcome of the competition may say something about how well you are doing. Your performance within this framework may represent the struggle against inner conflicts such individual fears and weaknesses, or may be referring to a realistic problem or situation at work or in your relationships.

Cigarettes in you dream uncover some anxiety or release from it; dependence, feeling of having a support, a friend, or help to meet stress or feelings you have about social contact. Being naked in dream reveals what we usually try to hide, in the way of feelings, thoughts and reactions. Your dream is telling for some reason you are willing to reveal more of what your really feel, and who you really are, than usual.

This is an obvious sexual dream which brings out your attitudes and concerns in regard to your sexuality. If you are feeling guilty, stressed or concerned about your sexual activities (or a lack of them), they will be reinforced in these explicit dreams containing sexual organs.

I always have dreams about rabbits. I do have a rabbit in real life. I always dreram that they escape from their cage and I will see them outside tha house with other bunnies and then I would be all excited and decide to keep them all. last night I dreamnt about a rabbit again and I was giving it a bath and it was obedient and stayed in place while I put soap and wash him with water. I have a companion while giving the rabbit a bath and he was a child but then in that same dream the child became possesed with dark spirits and I went to my family to tell them and they did not care.

At 10:19 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, in your dreams, RABBITS can represent luck, quickness, fertility or magic. However, they can also symbolize your lack of consciousness or awareness. Rabbits as dream symbols might suggest to you that sometimes you react too quickly to life's situations and that more thought and planning may be needed. Dream about giving your rabbit a bath means you want to be petted or cared for. It could also uncover your need for gentle contact and caring.

Hello , A couple of dreams .

I dream I was in hell ( very scary) I remember seeing demons. Then I fell down to my knees and started praying, and I awaken.

I dreamt I was on the patio at our house, and (at our house theres a great view). I dreamt I saw landmarks on the horizon, eiffel tower, big ben, statue of liberty, Pisa. And in my dream as I turned around I saw my deceased grandfather, and he ask me why are you afraid?

At 10:52 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, many dreams come from the private unconscious and are a reflection on thoughts, fears, desires, issues or are a response to stressful or anxiety provoking situations. At times people have dreams about CHEATING on their partners as a response to a long and monogamous relationship. The dream may be a compensation for boredom, monotony or unhappiness. On the other hand, the dream could be about your boyfriend connecting to deeper parts of himself, which is represented by a desirable person of the opposite sex.

At 1:47 PM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, your dream of HELL uncovers emotions, anxieties of which you are fearful. Your self created misery, perhaps arising out of such things as anger or resentment you stick to, or a sense of being different or unwanted. Feelings that burn in you; pain from past trauma; memories of, or feelings connected with, a place or relationship you were deeply unhappy in.

In the second dream, the landmarks represent your undeveloped potentials; the opportunities you meet to make yourself real in the world, to create something from within yourself. This might sometimes represent the undeveloped parts of your own nature that need attention and cultivation or character building. You deceased grandfather was a messenger with purpose to encourage you not to be afraid to expand your great potentials.

I had a dream of two lion-like animals with some markings like a tiger were fighting each other in my front yard. Then they saw me and my husband and children and became set on coming after us to attack. At the moment they saw us, a coyote ran across the field. We hid in our house and they clawed the doors and were going crazy. The dream ended suddenly with no resolution or ending of explanation. The next morning a coyote ran across our yard for real, so that really tripped me out.
Last night I dreamed of hearing a noise and my husband and I ran into the living room from our bedroom to see what it was. We opened the front door to complete darkness, but I saw the figure of three copperhead snakes(I could tell by the coil and body and head shape that is what they were) I screamed and shut the door. At first my husband didn't see them, but when I pointed them out he did. After I slammed the door. One faceless snake began to come underneath the door Very stuck-like and slowly. I grabbed a butcher knife and began hacking it up as it slowly progressed under the door, piece by piece. I was very angry at the snakes invasion, I was afraid of it, but enraged by it and not afraid to get close and hack it up.
Any clue to what these crazy dreams mean?

Anonymous, Carl Jung said that all wild ANIMALS indicate latent affects (feelings and emotions that we do not readily deal with). They are also symbolic of dangers (hurtful and negative things) being "swallowed" by the unconscious. Animals represent the qualities in your character or specific aspects of your personality. They could symbolize your more intuitive and instinctive parts, or they could serve as messengers for the unconscious.
The wild animal could also represent your unrepressed instinctive reactions such as sex and anger. In the attacking mode in dream it means unleashed aggression. In some dreams it depicts what we feel in relationship with other people. The attack, the criticism and malign emotions directed at us by others are frequently shown as an animal attacking or ready to attack or biting us, as is our own internalized anger or fear. Sometimes we may be aware of this, but often remarks are made which we miss, yet are sensed as an attack by our unconscious. Or we feel things and do not express them in any way, so they become directed secretly where they can cause harm.
Coyote is usually seen as a trickster and delights in all sorts of pranks, mischief and jokes. James Lewis, in his book The Dream Encyclopedia, says that Coyote is not by nature evil, even though the results of his activities are often unpleasant. These activities centre on bringing attention to our own often hidden foolishness or shams or lies.
The lion-like animals in your dream represent the power of your physical strength, of your temper, of your emotions or sexuality; love that has become anger through jealousy or pain.

Honiebyrd,
Hi, it’s nice to hear from you again. Your dream is wonderful and exceptional. It portrays your highest potential; what you are capable of but may not yet have lived; your intuition and wisdom transcending your own personality. White in dreams often refers to greater awareness, to clearness of mind and purity.
Hair is a valuable dream symbol. It represents physical and spiritual strength. Samson's hair was the source of his strength and virility. In your dream hair can represent your thoughts, knowledge, and reasoning. White or gray hair represents age and wisdom.
Hearing music in your dreams has positive connotations and can be looked at from a spiritual point of view. Music is healing to the soul, and as you are listening to it in your dream, you may be connected to the wonderful, creative spirit or flow of life suggesting a degree of inner harmony and emotional expression. I can say that in your dream state you have traveled to other higher and more spiritual plains.

I have a question about a few dreams that me and my guy friend had. He had a dream that I was stuck in a toilet (not on) and he was trying to get me out. He didn't tell me anything else though. Also, I had a dream last night that this dinosaur father's wife and child were abducted. The father dinosaur went into his RV to go search for them. In the passenger seat was the child's stuffed animal with it's left arm ripped off. Next I dreamt that I was confronting my dad about going into this place with lots of hookers. After I caught him there, this black (female) hooker came running out and slapped my arm. Then she challenged me to a game of chess. Oh and by the way, me and my guy friend got into a huge fight and we were both crying (in real life). We forgave each other though. What on earth does this all mean?
