The Four Rules of Dream Interpretation

1. Everything Is Me
For the beginner, this is probably the most difficult aspect of dreams to accept. Dreams of family members, friends, enemies, - all represent various aspects of the dreamer's personality.

Solid things such as houses, buildings, cars, etc. reflect the physical body.

Symbols of fire in dreams, such as fire, bombs, electricity, etc. represent the dreamer’s emotions.
Air, atmosphere or the interior of a room show the dreamer’s state of mind.

Water symbols i.e. sea, rivers, lakes, canals, etc. reflect the spiritual or cultural life of the dreamer. How water appears or is organized indicates the dreamer's philosophy of life.

2. Cause and Effect
All the symbols in dreams are linked to show cause and effect. In other words find a symbol to show the cause of the problem and another symbol to illustrate the effect.

3. Personal Responsibility
The dreamer is ALWAYS responsible for what happened, is happening, can happen or will happen in the dream. On the surface these seem to be outside our control but when we apply this rule we find that we are responsible for our own progress.

4. Avoidance
Look for what you are trying to avoid in the dream. This is what you need to accept or face up to in waking life. Dreams try to create wholeness or completeness in the dreamer by drawing scattered aspects of his personality together.

Please help me interpret this dream.

I'm in a mansion with many rooms and running away from somebody/something frightening. I'm running from room to room hoping to find an exit but reaches a dead end in a room with only windows. I jumped out of the window(from around 6th floor) but reaches ground floor safely.

What does this signifies?

Starry, to see a mansion in your dream, symbolizes your greatest potential and growth. To dream that you are running away from someone indicates an issue that you are trying to avoid. You are not taking or accepting responsibility for your actions. In particular, if you are running from an attacker or any danger, then it suggests that you are not facing and confronting your fears. Dreams about various rooms often relate to hidden areas of the conscious mind and different aspects of your personality. To see a dark room denotes that that you feel trapped or repressed in a situation. To see an exit in your dream indicates that you are looking for a way out of a waking situation.

To see windows in your dream signifies bright hopes, vast possibilities and insight.

To dream that you are looking out the window signifies your outlook on life, your consciousness, point of view, awareness, and intuition. You may be reflecting on a decision and seeking guidance. If you are looking in the window, then it indicates that you are doing some soul searching and looking within yourself.

To dream that you are jumping and reach the floor safely indicates that you need to take a risk and go for it. You will find progress toward your goals.

can you help me interpret this dream?
i keep having this recurring dream,it's been happening for about 2 weeks now, almost every night.

i dream that i am walking across the street from a parking lot,to a concert.i'm the last one to cross the street, and out of no where,i get run over by a car driven by the bassist from different band.as soon as i see my friends running towards me,i always wake up.

now i'm kind of scared to go to the concert,i'm afraid something bad will happen!

At 1:49 PM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, recurring dreams repeat themselves with little variation in story or theme. Dreams may recur because a conflict depicted in the dream remains unresolved or ignored. Once you have found a resolution to the problem, your recurring dreams will cease.

To see a street in your dream, symbolizes your life's path. The condition of the street reflects how much control you have over the direction of your life. To dream that a threat is on a street parallels a hostile situation/person you are encountering in your waking life. It is an obstacle that you need to overcome, no matter how intimidating the situation or person may appear. To dream that you are hit by a car, suggests that your lifestyle, beliefs or goals may be in conflict with another's. It may also be symbolic of a jolting experience or injured pride.

To see your friends in your dream signifies aspects of your personality that you have rejected, but are ready to integrate this rejected part of yourself.

Recurring car dreams usually deal with life's major themes that may include issues of control and sensibility. So, nothing bad will happen to you. Just try to define your greatest obstacle in life and the way to overcome it.

I've always had the same nightmare ever since i was little. I am playing hide and seek with my friends, I'm counting while they go off to hide. As i'm counting a stranger approaches me. I cant see his face as he is wearing a long coat with his hood up. I run to my friends house and my mum opens the door and tells me to go away. I tell her about the stranger, but she just says the samr thing again and tells me my friends arent hiding in that house. As i turn to run, the stranger is getting closer......I knock on the door again, but my mum just tells me to stop mucking about. As she closes the door, my friends are staring out of the window laughing and the stranger creeps up behind me.

Spirita please help me with this dream:
A week ago I had a dream in which me and my parents were trying to go up to a mountain, which I thought was in Japan. The first time we tried there was a turn and our car slipped and fell into the sea. We actually survived and then started going up on the mountain again, and we had our car. The reason why we were trying to go up was that on the top of the mountain I would learn how to draw. The dream said there were five ways to draw and I had learned just the two of them. Then two of my classmates appeared(whom I don't really like) and told me they knew all five ways of drawing, but they wouldn't show me.

Another interesting dream was that of one of my friends. He had seen this dream three years ago and it came true a week ago. In his dream he had seen that he played basketball against a guy that weared green and yellow shoes. The children that were the spectators were screaming:"Stop playing basketball! Play something else!" And then there was a guy who shouted:"Indeed, he plays the piano!" This dream came true...is it a coincidence?

Jill, your dream suggests that you are keeping some secret or withholding some information. You may not be facing up to a situation or not want to deal with an issue. However, you may be getting ready to reveal and confess before somebody finds out.

To see a stranger in your dream signifies a part of yourself that is repressed and hidden.

To dream about doors closed, signifies opportunities that are denied and not available to you or that you have missed out on. It suggests that you are having some anti-social tendencies and harsh lessons that need to be learned.
To see your friends in your dream signifies aspects of your personality that you have rejected, but are ready to integrate this rejected part of yourself. The relationships you have with those around you are important in learning about yourself. If you are being laughed at in your dream, indicates your insecurities and fears of not being accepted.

To dream that you are having a conversation with your mother denotes a matter that has preoccupied your mind and you are not sure how to deal with it in your waking life. It indicates unresolved problems that still need to be worked out with your mother.

To see your parents in your dream, symbolizes your concerns and worries about your own parents. Alternatively, it represents the merging of the female and male aspects of your character.

In the dreams I remember I don't know these people but in the dream I do. I am always in different places. The other night I dreamed about some crazy man from jail tring to get me and then shoots me and all the people I am with. But we don't die. But the other night I had a dream about an earthquake. and it almost felt like it was a continuation of a dream I once had before but I really never had. My dreams are really weird. Is there a way to make it so I don't remember my dreams. It might make my life alittle easier.

i've always wondered why my dreams are always kinda dark and blurry, and not like how i see the world in my woken state?

At 10:54 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, sometimes, dreams can be understood in the context of repressed thoughts. Dreaming serves as an outlet for those thoughts and impulses we repress during the day. When we go to sleep at night and slip into our dream state, we feel liberated and behave and act in a manner that we do not allow ourselves in our waking life.

Idreamed that upon waking, some one had stolen my big screen television, my computer, and other odd and end furniture. What haunts me spiritually is the fact that everywhere something was missing, a sheet had been draped over that place as if to hide what was missing. I seemed to carry on with things in the rest of the house but I couldn't stop staring at the sheets and what they could have ment.

At 10:20 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

To dream about stealing denotes that you are deprived, and where the stealing takes place (at home) is indicative of your neediness. Home in dream, signifies security, basic needs, and values, that's what your dreams are telling you is missing. To dream that you are missing something also denotes a sense of being out of control and being disorganized.

To see sheets in dreams indicates open sexuality - how others see you.

Ok I had a dream that I was coming out of my room and my mom and my brother were calling me a *****. The room had marble floor and a white wall. (A sitting room maybe?) It had three chairs and a couch. I came out of the sitting room and I saw a staircas going straight up. I started running to the door with a bag then I woke up. What could that mean? I have seen the same house in alot of my dreams. I have never seen the house in my waking life.

At 10:40 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, your dream is very complex and has a lot of symbols relevant for dream interpretation. First, to see a house in your dream represents your own soul and self. Specific rooms in the house indicate a specific aspect of your mind. In general, the attic represents your intellect; the basement represents the unconscious, etc. All of your experiences, stages of development, and parts of your conscious and unconscious life may be represented by that house. The house also may be representing issues concerning a particular dilemma in your life, or it may be more general and comprehensive. To see an unknown house in your dream indicates that you are entering into a new phase or new area in your life.

To dream that you are having a conversation with your mother denotes a matter that has preoccupied your mind and you are not sure how to deal with it in your waking life. It indicates unresolved problems that still need to be worked out with your mother. To see your brother in your dream, may symbolize some aspect of your relationship with him. To hear your mother call you names signifies your fear that you have been negligent in your duties and responsibilities. You are afraid of pursuing down the wrong path.

Generally, dreaming of ascending a stairway denotes movement in a positive direction while descending is indicative of a down period or negative flow of ideas or actions. Stairs also symbolize change and transformation. If you are afraid of going up the stairs, then it suggests that you are afraid to confront your repressed emotions and thoughts.

To see a wall in your dream signifies limitations, obstacles and boundaries. There is a barrier obstructing your progress. You may have been accustomed to your old habits and way of thinking. Some people are emotionally guarded and feel unable to express themselves freely. If you are such a person, this dream symbol might be pointing to the walls that you have built around yourself. Additionally, if you are experiencing challenges and seemingly unsolvable difficulties in daily life, the wall in your dream may be a reflection of those factors.

To see a chair in your dream, symbolizes your need to sit down and take time out to contemplate a situation before proceeding.

Doors are passageways and in our dreams that is their symbolism. Going through a door may represent going from one state of consciousness to another or from one inner plane to another. Locked or closed doors may represent an obstacle or opportunities that are not currently available to you.

To dream that you are running away from someone indicates an issue that you are trying to avoid. You are not taking or accepting responsibility for your actions.

I dreamt:
My sister, her friend and I are looking for clues in this house. ( I don't know what the clues are for) When we enter, the first thing we see is a big black dog. It tries to attack me, and only me. I end up placing my foot on its muzzle to stop it biting me, though it gets free once and bite me once. I somehow manage to lock it in a cupboard, though the lock doesn't seem very stable. We then go upstairs via a ladder. My sister friend need something to drink, but all we can find is chlorine (I don't really know...) We don't find anyclues, and the dog has escaped upstairs. (not sure how it got up the ladder). My sister and I got down the ladder, but her friend is stuck up there. They both (the dog and her) come to where the top of the laddder is but it has fallen down. But the dog doesn't attack her it just waits for the ladder to be put up, so it can go for me. I pusht the ladder back up, so it jumps for it.I pull the ladder away, so the dog falls to the ground, kncking slightly unconscious, It gets up and I spray it in the face with Lynx (I think)
It then skips to night time, and we are all outside. I killed the dog somehow, and we have buried it, we are just burying a turnip (no idea sorry!) when the owner comes home. We apologise to her and she apologises to us for her dogs bad behaviour. Everything seems ok. I have a bucket which had the turnip in, but now has, what I believed to be, part of the dog. I then notice it is a small girls head (It scared me) I run to the river near by, all while the owner of the house is shouting after me, asking what I have got in my bucket. I throw the head in the river, and tell the woman it was just some dirt.
I then woke up.

Emily, to see a house in your dream, represents your own soul and self.
To see a dog in your dream, indicate a skill that you have ignored or forgotten, but needs to be activated. Alternatively, dogs may symbolize intuition, loyalty, generosity, protection, and fidelity. If you are killing a dog in your dream, your are killing the above characteristics dog represents.
To dream that a dog bites your , suggests that you have lost your ability to balance aspects of your life. You may be hesitant in approaching a new situation or have no desire to move forward with your goals.

To dream that you are climbing up a ladder, suggests that you have reached a new level of achievement and higher awareness. It is indicative of prosperity, hard work and efforts. To dream that you escape by means of a ladder, signifies that you will be successful after much struggle and obstacles.

I interpret dreams for others but ask for help in interpreting mine own. I think it is sort of like the advice against being your own lawyer or doctor. Here it is:
My mother (who is dead) showed me a large room filled with people and told me they were all my good friends. She also told me that she told my brother Ron that he argues to much and finally he said to her, "Okay" relunctantly in agreement. Shortly after that I was in kind of neighborhood I grew up in but it was not so good a neighborhood any more as there were some run down houses. I went up to one I recognized and it was a kind of shop now being run by I man I apparently knew (I don't know him in waking now though). He was very friendly and asked me to come in and look around. He had added some things. As I did I remembered how I had been there before. The shabby exterior was a great contrast as inside was a beautiful place. In fact it was like a beautiful sparkling little city or town.. I had a wonderful time exploring this beautiful and pleasant place.

Greanwitch, sorry for not answering your question sooner.

I guess you already know that Carl Jung suggests that women in dreams represent our collective unconscious and men the collective consciousness. Thus, the woman is that force, or current, inside of you that nudges you on and inspires you. It is your intuition and the knowledge that in not necessarily attached to words. Men, on the other hand, represent the active part of us that use the information received to create the physical reality of our lives. When the two are working together well, we have balance and experience awareness leading to peace and productivity.

When interpreting this dream with people in it, consider all of the details and the feelings in the dream. The strangers in your dreams represent different parts of yourself and are extensions and projections of your own personality. Seeing a stranger in dream also symbolizes the part of you that is repressed and hidden.

To see your mother in your dream represents the nurturing aspect of your own character. Mothers offer shelter, comfort, life, guidance and protection.
If you dream of a mother who has died then it suggests that a current situation or relationship in you life resembles the quality of that deceased person.

Dreams relating to a house often refer to various aspects of the Self. To dream that you are in a room represents a particular aspect of yourself or a particular relationship. Dreams about various rooms often relate to hidden areas of the conscious mind and different aspects of your personality.

To dream about your neighborhood, represents a sense of community and the need to be more active. You are expressing a need to develop new friends and new ties. To dream of having a good neighbor, signifies enjoyment and tranquility at home.
To dream that you find and discover new rooms, suggests that you are developing new strengths and taking on new roles. You may be growing emotionally.
To see an appealing or comfortable room signifies wealth and satisfaction in life. To dream that you are joyful denotes harmony amongst friends and loved ones. To feel peace in your dream indicates an end or a resolution to an emotional issue or inner conflict. It may signal and end of a cycle and the pause before the beginning of a new endeavor. It also suggests that you have reached a new level of stability and calmness.

So, your dream was telling you that you are about to reach a new level of maturity and stability. You are not afraid to analyze yourself and to explore varies parts of your complex and wonderful self. Keep up a good work; the pleasant and happy moments are on your way.

PS. Your dream was so beautiful; I almost felt I was a part of it

I dreamt of a scorpion, it was on a fence at my girlfriends house, It looked like a stick insect and was hard to see, My daughter was going to touch it, then noticed its sting, and warned her not to touch it.
When i woke up a small living scorpion was under my bed, this dream would normally be ignored.

I did not harm the scorpion, and let it go outside.
I am looking for a mythological (omen) interpretation greek or egyptian rather than a psychological or astrological interpretation

At 10:10 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

Superstition based dream interpretation books say that a scorpion may constitute a warning. Some believe that the scorpion is also a symbol of transformation. Books are saying that the scorpion is a constant reminder that death walks with us. We should always remember that we are in process of crossing a threshold.

In Greek Mythology scorpion stands for a military-like readiness. More usually, it symbolizes revenge.

In my interpretation, to see a scorpion in your dream, represents a situation in your waking life which may have been painful or hurtful. It is also indicative of destructive feelings, bitter words and/or negative thoughts being expressed by or aimed against you. Your dream forewarns of a self-destructive and self-defeating path.

spirita, i keep having a dream where a cat that i used to have in my childhood that died in real life comes to me at my mother's house. my cat is perfectly healthy again, but she has lots of kittens with her when she arrives. what does this mean?

At 10:01 AM, Blogger Spirita said...

Because a cat is often an easy source of physical contact and affection it can depict the need to be cared for and warm affection, even sexual love accompanied with intense warm feelings.
For some women cats are a substitute baby, it is therefore used in many dreams to represent a woman's urge or need to care for someone, or directly her need to reproduce, therefore desire for sex; refined female sexuality.

If you dreamt about your cat it may well represent your own, perhaps unconscious, desires to have a baby. Jungians see the cat as representing a deep psychological secret, a hidden side of ones nature.

Seeing a cat having kittens signifies desire for or feelings about babies or ones own babyhood; fertility.

Wickedkiwi, when you dream about your ex-boyfriend it means that you have carried feelings with you from the relationship, and your dreams about your ex will try to work out some way of feeling at ease within yourself about the break. This is especially so if difficult or painful emotions were involved. If you are having sexual contact with him the dream may be a release of your sexual feelings.

last summer, i had this dream:

I was in the middle of nowhere, and on a building with 3 platforms, i think, but no inside. below the first platform (the one that i, someone from my summer camp, and one other person my age whom i didn't know) was 3 or 4 little pens, surrounded by a white fence and with grass, all in a row. on the second platform was a wizard dressed in blue robes with stars and moons on it, and he had two birds with him, i think (one was blue-green, and the other was blue). a contest was being held to see if we could destroy the building and live. on the front of platform 1, there were two colorful laser guns that could destroy the building's support thingies. on platform 2, there was only one. in the dream, three days had passed and we finally got the building to give way. The wizard said something like "We destroyed it, hold on!" and i said to myself "I gotta get as close as possible to the ground so i don't die!" i did what i said, jumped, and landed safely into one of the pens. the two other people landed safely, as well. a crowd was watching the whole thing, and as soon as the three of us (the wizard was behind the pens) the crowd and the wizard both applauded, and the girl from summer camp said "We did it! We did it!" I shouted the same thing, i think. then, I woke up.

What does this dream mean?

At 8:16 PM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, your dream doesn't have a deeper meaning, it is simply a form of entertainment from your unconscious. Also your dream may represent the challenges in your life, your competitive nature, or your childishness. They may point out goals to be achieved or are a simple way to let out steam.

Jesse, fighting with your mom in your dream may be an extension of daily life and a reflection on your relationship with her. The anger or aggression in the dream relates to your own feelings and is a fundamental response to threat. Meeting anger, aggression and hostility in your dreams is healthy, does not lead to suppressing it or expressing it socially.

When i was attending my all girls middle school, I had a sexual dream about one of my classmates. She was a tomboy and I never particularly liked her. Then just this past summer (the summer before my freshman year of college) I had a sexual dream about another girl from my middle school. This time however, the girls skin was extremely bumpy and prickley and it grossed me out. I had not seen or talked to this girl since middle school (although she was one of my best friends in middle school), but, by chance, we were going to go to the same college. Do these two dreams mean I am a lesbian? I have a boyfriend and I am pretty sure I am heterosexual, but in times if extreme stress i think of these two dreams and wonder.

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Spirita said...

Anonymous, your dream doesn’t mean you are lesbian. SEXUAL dreams don't always have sexual meaning. They are at times about power, control, identity and other non-sexual issues of life. If a heterosexual person is having a homosexual dream, it may have a variety of connotations. It simply may mean you are claiming the opposite side of your personality. It can also show conflict or anxiety about your own gender; feelings of sexual inadequacy, or inadequacy in your own gender.

Could you please interpret this dream for me? I had a dream a few months ago, (In-body) that I was walking along a road with hills on either side, and to my right was a little farm sitting atop a hill! I went inside the small house next to it, (which was occupied by the owner of the farm) and a kind-looking old man was playing cards with his buff trucker brothers. He got out of his seat and showed me his crops. They were flowers that grew to the size of cornstalks! They were of every color, and if you stuck your hand inside, you would find an edible seed that looked like a small eggplant but was the color of the flower it came from. The man had a small stable in the back where he kept sheep. He never sheared them, but their coats were neat and trim. He used the sheep for harvesting the seeds. They would go in a straight line, side by side, and go through the field, rolling the seeds as they went. After a while, the seeds were in a neat pile. Then I woke up.

Anonymous, I like your dream of FLOWERS very much. It has very positive meaning. The road in your dream is direction you are pursuing, direction that lead you to a particular point in life. A road is your destiny, much of it self created by your decisions and predispositions. A road can symbolize any direction you have taken, or are thinking of taking, a love affair, marriage, business, etc. Hills along the road are difficulties, obstacles, and something needing energy with which to deal with it. A hill also symbolizes the climb to higher accomplishment, wider view of life or opportunities. If you are right handed, the farm on your right side symbolizes conscious attributes as opposed to unconscious. It may also suggest right as opposed to wrong. When you see a farm in your dream it usually has to do with your relationship and with your natural urges, the basic drives, such as sex, survival, social hierarchy, parenthood, the down to earth side of yourself. The old man in your dream may refer to your parent or to life experience. It can also face you with feelings about ageing, and how you are dealing with it. Flowers in dream represent growth and the opening out of abilities or feelings. Flowers can stand for a sense of beauty, love, emotions. Flowers in your dreams could represent the simplest feelings of satisfaction to the deepest feelings of spiritual completeness. Flower in dream is a friendly sign which could be the symbol of wholeness that represents the "psychic center of the personality." Additionally, the colors could symbolize the psychic centers in our bodies called chakras. Flowers also represent hope and positive growth, along with simplicity, innocence. The seeds are the stored influences and experiences of the past. Seeds also signify your enormous potential for a new beginning, or new growth.

Anonymous, dreaming about DEVILS and DEMONS is usually very frightening and you may awake from fear. The devil does not generally represent something outside of yourself. It usually symbolizes the most negative and least developed part of you. It may be that part of you that is ignorant and destructive. Seeing or interacting with the devil in your dreams may have several different meanings and the interpretation depends on the details of the dream. However, it almost always points to something negative and disturbing in your personality, daily life, or environment. Carl Jung called such dark figures "the shadow" and said that they represent the negative ego personality and qualities which are painful and regrettable. You may have dark thoughts or have engaged in negative actions and now are experiencing guilt, fear, and anxiety.

Hi Spirita! I am desperately seeking your advice and interpretations about nightmares I've been having. I desperately want it to stop and I can't find answers or interpretations anywhere. I love how you are able to interpret the most detailed of dreams and I was hoping you could help me. Before I tell you my nightmares though, I thought I should give you a history of the people in it as well. About two years ago, I was in an abusive relationship with this guy who would hit me, force to have intercourse with me even when I would say no and didn't want to, cheat on me, make me look stupid, spread lies about me, the works. The relationship was horrific and I get scared when I remember it. I was too scared to tell anybody before and those who were close to me were scared to say or do anything because my ex is a skilled fighter (I kid you not) and in a dangerous and infamous fraternity and those who tried to do something about it would end up getting hurt. It was only when my current boyfriend confronted him and did something miraculous that made my ex stop threatening me and finally let me go. I see him as the one who saved me from it and I found refuge in him and always feel so safe with him. He has been completely wonderful and has helped me grow.

Recently though, my boyfriend had to leave the country for a few weeks and since then I have been having nightmare's about my ex. The first one was that my boyfriend and I are in a cave having a good time then he tells me he has to leave for a while to get something then when he comes back, I notice something different about him and little by little he morphs into my ex. I cry uncontrollably but I feel like I have no choice but to accept it and end up feeling angry, trapped and disgusted. The second dream is that my boyfriend is non-existent in this world and I am w/my ex and back to being miserable. My ex and I are in my grandma's kitchen but it is not the bright and cheery kitchen that I know instead it has the same atmosphere and feel of a slasher movie backdrop (?). My ex is getting something off the shelf when suddenly I see disgusting brown vertical lines (they sort of look like long, disgusting moles, some thick, some thin) on his calves and I tell him he has bad brown varicose veins and he assures me that he doesn't and it is so disgusting that I run away and he is chasing me.

I want these nightmares of my ex to stop and I am hoping that you can help me. And I'm sorry if the post was too long.
